Get Involved
We need your help. There are many opportunities for you to serve in this ministry. All we ask is that you have a willing heart and a spirit of obedience and you can play a crucial role in God's ministry of Changing Hearts, Transforming Lives and Impacting the World. Here's some basic information to help you "get involved."
Kairos Inside at California City Correctional Facility
Kairos Inside is composed of well-organized and well-trained volunteer teams of men and women from the communities surrounding an institution who present an introductory 3-day weekend, described as a short course in Christianity. This inter-denominational team of volunteers - both clergy and laypersons, consists of 30 to 50 men with an equal amount of resident inmates attending the weekend retreat. The weekends are usually held around April and October. Team formation and training begins about 2 months before the weekend at a predetermined church, generally in the Orange County area. Training starts at 8 am and last through 2 pm for a total of 6 Saturday sessions.
Be a Team Member
The Kairos California City team conducts monthly reunions with the inmates at the California City to provide encouragement and model Christian fellowship. The reunions are once a month and last about 3 hours. We form carpools so that the transportation to Cal City is easy on everyone.
Generally, we like our Kairos volunteers to have completed a 3 day Christian movement such as Cursillo, Walk to Emmaus, Tres Dias or Via de Cristo before joining the team but this is not mandatory.
Kairos volunteers come from all walks and strata of life. They all share a desire to follow Christ's admonition of Matthew 25:36, "I was in prison and you visited me." If you feel God's call to minister to the incarcerated, the female family member of someone incarcerated, as a part of a Kairos team. Not all team members serve inside correctional institutions.
Be a Support Volunteer
Each Kairos retreat weekend has opportunities for outside support, such as baking cookies, writing letters of support, or preparing meals. Get your church's Sunday school classes to color placemats for mealtime in prison.
