Kairos Prison Ministry of San Quentin State Prison is a Christian faith based ministry which addresses the spiritual needs of incarcerated men, women, youth and, their families. By sharing the love and forgiveness of Jesus Christ, Kairos hopes to change hearts, transform lives and impact the world. As a ministry, Kairos embraces a diverse group of volunteers working together to fulfill Christ's call to action in Matthew 25:36.

The Kairos Inside Ministry is a Christian ministry, which conducts a highly structured program designed for use at San Quentin State Prison. The Kairos program starts with a 3½-day weekend, which allows participants to witness Christ's love through the servitude of Christian Kairos volunteers through carefully coordinated talks, discussions, chapel meditations, and music led by a same-gender team of volunteers.

During this event participants are given the opportunity to experience a spiritual renewal accepting God's call to a life of Christian witness and service to one another during their stay in the institution, and beyond.  The Kairos program concept is to build the Christian community inside the institution where the Kairos Community prays and fellowships together on a regular basis. Each month the free-world Kairos community returns for a “Reunion” of the entire Kairos community. Interested? Here are the next steps...

Get Involved

We need your help.  There are many opportunities for you to serve in this ministry. All we ask is that you have a willing heart and a spirit of obedience and you can play a crucial role in God's ministry of Changing Hearts, Transforming Lives and Impacting the World.  Here's some basic information to help you "get involved."

Kairos Inside at San Quentin State Prison

Kairos Inside is composed of well-organized and well-trained volunteer teams of men and women from the communities surrounding an institution who present an introductory 3-day weekend, described as a short course in Christianity. This inter-denominational team of volunteers - both clergy and laypersons - works in cooperation with the Chaplain who carefully selects up to 42 inmate leaders to attend. Well organized follow-up is part of this program.

Be a Team Member

Kairos volunteers come from all walks and strata of life. They all share a desire to follow Christ's admonition of Matthew 25:36, "I was in prison and you visited me."  If you feel God's call to minister to the incarcerated, the female family member of someone incarcerated, as a part of a Kairos team.  Not all team members serve inside correctional institutions.

Be a Support Volunteer

Each Kairos retreat weekend has opportunities for outside support, such as baking cookies, writing letters of support, or preparing meals.  Get your church's Sunday school classes to color placemats for mealtime in prison.
